Every Day, Something New
“I do not think that there has been a day where I haven’t learned something new, and I really can’t imagine a day where I won’t.”

Every Day, Something New
By Grete Bressner, Test Engineer
After four years spent completing my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, I took a month to travel throughout Europe, spending time in France and Austria. Upon my return, I started my new job in July 2022, working at Hutchinson Aerospace as a test engineer.
I have been at Hutchinson for a little over a year now and I can truly say that it has been great. A lot of people will say you won’t like your first job out of college or that work is the only thing that should be important right now, and I feel lucky to say that is not the case for me.
Working in the Test Lab has been challenging in the best ways possible. Nearly every problem and every task I have encountered has been different, and even the things that may look similar on the surface require unique thoughts and solutions. It’s what makes every day so interesting.
Some days I get to be really hands on by using the Test stands that we have or even setting up new ones. On other days, I am more creative and design Test fixtures and then the outcome becomes more analytical by looking at and processing the Test data that we receive. Then, other days, it is a combination of everything.
I really enjoy being able to work with the different generations of engineers on our team and seeing the different perspectives that they all bring. It can feel intimidating having such knowledgeable people around you, especially when starting out, but they all make you feel comfortable. One of the best things about working here is that everyone wants me to learn and wants to share what they know. It feels great being able to shamelessly go up to anyone and ask as many questions as I’d like, no matter how basic or silly they may seem.
Everyone here also values the thoughts and opinions I might have, even though I am not yet as experienced. Being new to the working world can feel quite scary, and it has been so nice to have a team of people willing to guide me. I look forward to the day when I will be able to pass some knowledge on to the next incoming engineers.
The work we do here is unique and innovative and I am so excited to be a part of it. I get to try so many new things, be hands-on and work with some really awesome people. Everything about my job makes me want to learn more.
